What experiences have you had with youth? Adolescents? Your subject area?
I have several coworkers that are teenagers and work with them as equals and provide them with training when learning new skills. I subbed at a school for five weeks in math classes ranging from pre-algebra to AP calculus. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics.
During the Fall 2013 semester, I co-taught at Temecula Valley High School. I worked with Audra McGuire in Geometry, and thoroughly enjoyed it. This semester, Spring 2014, I am at Paloma Valley High School in Menifee. I am excited to be here and to be a Wildcat.
What are your content area skills (literacy, numeracy, science, social science, language and physical skills)? What are your strengths? What supports do you need?
I have always been skillful in working with numbers. Although I tended to do well in literacy, science, and social science, they were all unnatural to my way of thinking or did not catch my interest the way numbers do. To me, mathematics is just a whole bunch of puzzles; I have parts and pieces, but by putting everything together where it belongs, something beautiful happens.
What are you social skills? What are your strengths when working with others? What supports do you need when working with others?
I love interacting with other people. I have worked in the food service industry since 2007 and thrive on the opportunity to serve our customers. Having a friendly personality makes conversation natural and effortless. I communicate well when working with others. Something that needs strengthening when working with others is making my expectations clear.
LEARNING PROFILE
Describe your personality, affect, multiple intelligence preferences...?
Based on the True Colors Personality Quiz, I am of gold personality type. I strive on structure and did well in the “traditional” school setting. I learn well from writing things down and when seeing it visually.
What do you need to focus and learn? What motivates you? What kind of feedback helps you succeed (authoritative, direct, encouragement, challenges, independent self-assessments…)?
In order to focus and learn, I need the right environment. The background noise needs to be uniform. I need to be set up in a school like setting with a chair and cleared off table; I can’t be sitting on the floor, couch, bed, etc. I do best with challenges, positive feedback, and encouragement.
What are your pet peeves? What will disrupt your ability to learn?
Negative feedback tends to shut me down and kills my motivation to learn. Some of my pet peeves while trying to learn are annoying sounds such as a beeping in the background at the local Starbucks or an awful song.
INTERESTS & TALENTS
What do you like to do in your spare time? Describe your preferences in hobbies, music, films, books, television shows, art, exercise, sports ...
I like to spend time with my friends and family in my spare time. I like movies with a good story line. Also, I like television shows that have drama in it that keeps you wanting to watch the next episode. I also like movies, shows, and books that have the unexpected plot twist that causes me to gasp.
What are your likes and dislikes? What brightens your day? Lifts your spirits? What doesn’t?
Some of my likes include: country music, perfect weather, positive quotes, pedicures, getting to know somebody, cool skies, coffee, food, camping, spending time with friends, office supplies, getting dressed up when I have time, and taking naps. Some of my dislikes are: lack of sleep, chores, foul language, and driving.
Something that really brightens my day are random acts of kindness, whether it’s someone doing something kind for me, I observe someone doing something kind for someone else, or when I do something kind for a person, knowing that positive things are happening makes me so happy and really puts me on clouds for the rest of the day. Another thing that has the ability to brighten my day is a great hair day. Every once in a while there’s a day that my hair will just seem to be flawless. The added confidence and that relief of not having to spend time on hair styling can really boost anyone's day. On an opposite note, stress seems to be the one thing that downs my day.
What are your talents? What comes easy? What strengths do you rely on when learning new knowledge and skills?
I consider myself to be very observant. Taking notice in what is around me and making decisions based on that is one of my strong suits. Creativity usually comes easy to me. Whenever I need to add some pizzazz to a project or think of a cool idea, I tend to be happy with what I come up with. When learning new knowledge and skills, I need to lay it out in such a way that every aspect is analyzed and makes sense. Once I understand the parts, then I can truly understand the whole.
REFLECTION
When I teach...
There are many key points in my learning profile that will affect the way I will teach. Some of them are aspects I want to carry on into my class and others not so much. One of the things in my learning profile that will model how I want to teach is positive encouragement. I believe that a positive attitude can make a huge difference. This will come naturally for me to do in my classroom because it is what I grew up with and it is something I do on a daily basis. A concern that comes with that is finding a balance as an authority figure as well. I am friendly and positive, but I worry that my personality will have students believing that they can get away with not doing their work. I did well in the traditional school setting yet I am very aware that this is not the way most kids learn. I must actively consider if my lesson is what worked well for me or what will work well for my students and check to see that my students’ learning needs are being met.
