On Monday, March 17, we had the opportunity to meet with Diana Sanchez and Trent Suzuki. Diana’s knowledge and information was so helpful. I am already feeling stressed about being behind on the application process, so the resume guide was very beneficial. Also, the information regarding the cover letters (aka letter of interest) was also appreciated. The information she had about interviewing, although helpful, was a little past my current point. Due to the overwhelming nature of my situation, I am constantly reminding myself to take one step at a time.
The booklet Diana provided had some great articles from authors nationwide. There was info on resumes, cove letters, job fairs, interviewing and more. I intend on utilizing these tools at each stage of my job hunt/landing experience.
Trent Suzuki was not a speaker I expected to hear from. His struggles to find full time work for so long is somewhat scary. I know finding a PE position is tough, but I didn’t think a few years down the line that he would be still without fulltime work until now. I am glad that the PE folks in the program got the opportunity to hear from someone in their field. Often, covered material/information borderlines irrelevant to them.
The tips Trent included were helpful. For example, “I love BTSA.” I am worried about this ‘TPA on steroids;’ positive thinking will help me overcome the BTSA Battle. Also, becoming friends with the principal’s secretary when I hand deliver my resume and cover letter was a good reminder. Another tip, and perhaps the one that I would not have thought of, was a great line to use in a group interview. If in a group setting, someone before me answers a question very similarly to how I would have, I could say, “I like what Bob said, I would like to add…” This way, I am not repeating a similar response, I am not discrediting another person, and I still get the opportunity to add something.
Both of these speakers had several helpful points. Since their visit, I have created my resume which can be found here.
